Lifepoint Church in Wilmington, North Carolina is a multi-campus church running services at Pine Valley, Leland, Porters Neck, and Carolina Beach. Melissa Swann, their Creative Project Manager, brought me in during the spring of 2022 to take pressure off their in-house designer and to handle bigger series projects the team did not have bandwidth to build from scratch.
How we started
Our first big project together was the Binge the Bible sermon series. Melissa was clear that this was the first time Lifepoint had handed a full series to an outside contractor, and Binge the Bible took priority over everything else as we built it out. Once that was in motion she opened the floodgates on the rest. A typical week from her would land in my inbox as a list of eight to ten items. New kids ministry first-time guest cards, a 90-day tithe card refresh, care room cards organized by topic, social posts for service times, set list graphics for the Sunday worship lineup, a kids newsletter template, lobby TV announcement slide refreshes.
I had to flag capacity early. After one ten-item week landed I wrote back asking which projects were top priority, because the volume was not going to all fit inside a week. Melissa was good about it. The newsletter went first, the welcome card second, then care room, then the Sunday socials.
The work
The Care Room cards were the project I am most proud of from this engagement. Lifepoint keeps a set of cards in their care and prayer room with verses keyed to topics like addiction, adultery, baptism, and others. The existing set had drifted off-brand. I rebuilt the whole set using their branding guide, sent style options first, locked on a direction, and then produced the full topic list. I advised Melissa to have someone on her end spell-check the final files before printing, which I do on every print job, because I would rather catch a typo at her desk than at the printer.
The Kids First-Time Guest card was the other meaningful build. Melissa wanted a two-sided card that limited how much the check-in volunteers had to read aloud to first-time parents. I built two front options in different color directions, she picked the more colorful one, we tightened the back copy into bullets, and shipped.
A specific moment
The Binge the Bible AI files were one of the harder moments. I had a hard drive failure that took out my working files for that series before Lifepoint asked for them back. I had the JPGs on Dropbox, but the editable AI files were gone. I told Melissa straight. Her in-house designer recreated the main black logo and the team kept the series running for another season. Not the conversation I wanted to have. Worth telling because it shaped how I back up working files going forward.
In their words
"We can definitely work ahead most of the time. The series (Binge the bible) is the first time we have given a full series to a contractor. Anything binge the bible takes precedence over the other things." — Melissa Swann, Creative Project Manager, April 2022
Where things stand
Lifepoint moved off the monthly subscription in the late summer of 2022. Melissa wrote in to say they were not in a position to use a monthly service enough to make it worth it. I offered a smaller monthly package or a project-by-project arrangement, and she came back saying project-by-project would work for them, with new series support likely coming up again in the new year. The relationship ended on good terms. Lifepoint is the kind of client I would gladly take a one-off series project from any time.
Selected work
Finished pieces from the Lifepoint Church engagement are being added to the site. In the meantime, the full portfolio shows the range of sermon series, announcements, social, signage, and branding work.
